PL001 Norwich Thorpe in the 1950s
NEW AUGUST 2016. A set of 25 snapshots taken at Norwich Thorpe during the 1950s. What each picture may lack in sharpness is made up for by its atmosphere and interest.
The file starts with a page of introduction, followed by two pages of maps of the station and its approaches to illustrate the locations of the photographs. Then come 25 pages, each containing one of the photos plus a caption to it. The original prints all have information on the back giving the date, the locomotive number and sometimes the train it is working. This is included in the caption, plus other information where it is available and judged to be of some interest.
There is just one shot taken in the station itself, showing L1 67717 on a Sheringham train in platform 5. Then come a series of pictures of locomotives on or near to the manual turntable which was right next to the Carrow Road railings. These include B17 61620 Clumber, J20 64681, B2 61671 Royal Sovereign, B12 61566, WD O7 63018, V1s 67664 and 67679, L1 67794, N7 69708 and J66 68388 shunting a sand wagon.
There follow some snaps taken from the other side of Carrow Road, showing the lines ‘straight ahead’ to Whitlingham then on to Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Cromer. The locomotives on the trains featured were Clauds 62577, 62540 and 62517, E4 62792, F4 67163, B12 61542 and B1 61271.
Trains are then seen on the lines ‘round the bend’ to Trowse then on to Ely or Ipswich. Locomotives were D16 62593 and 62577 again, J19 64656, B2 61617 Ford Castle, J15 65472 and B17 61635 Milton. Finally comes one that took the avoiding loop – B1 61047 bringing an excursion on to the Yarmouth line at Wensum junction.
