RE057: The Norwich Thorpe Workshops and Running Shed.
NEW FEBRUARY 2022. This is a compilation of articles and illustrations which relate to the former workshops (initially for locomotives, later for rolling stock) and running shed at Norwich Thorpe.
The articles include a 1937 one from the Railway Gazette entitled 'Norwich Locomotive Depot' written by a running shed foreman there. This is supplemented by a short extract from the Locomotive Magazine of 1901, part of the series on 'Locomotives of the GER'. The third extract, a piece of news from the 1922 Locomotive Magazine, describes the stationary steam engine which drove all the workshop equipment until the advent of electric power, which had just replaced it - this was by then quite a museum piece, dating back to the 1840's.
The illustrations include a 1926 large-scale map of Norwich Thorpe (taken from File MP034) with all the relevant locations marked. There is a picture of their new coaling tower installed by the LNER in 1934, together with a drawing showing what is inside it. There is also a photograph of the old engine that had powered the workshops. Finally come four photographs from our Sales listing which depict the shops and the running shed.
