TO054: Newmarket Race Traffic in GER and LNER Days.
NEW FEBRUARY 2021. The main section here is a ten-page illustrated article from the Railway Magazine of November 1908, entitled 'How the Great Eastern Railway Works the Newmarket Race Traffic'. It was written by Cecil J Allen. He acknowledges help given by Mr W F Barratt, the Newmarket Station Master, and by Mr R P Ellis, the GER's Superintendent of the Line.
There are two aspects to this race traffic. One is the running of specials to bring visitors to Newmarket for race meetings, and the other is the conveyance of horses from the stables around Newmarket to race meetings in other parts of the country. Both are covered in the article.
The eleventh page is taken from the March 1937 issue of the Railway Magazine. It discusses changes made by the LNER in its running of specials to Newmarket.
The file concludes with three mystery photographs from the early 1900's (also available in our catalogue of JPEG photographs), originally the property of the GER's H F Hilton. They depict the arrival of an excursion. The disembarking passengers could be off for a day at the races, and - although there are doubts about it - the location could be Warren Hill station at Newmarket.
