RC058: Instructions for the Conveyance of Livestock, 1947.
NEW DECEMBER 2021. This is the Livestock Handbook, a 56-page card-covered book issued by the Railway Clearing House in December 1947. It describes itself as instructions relating to the transport of livestock by rail (passenger and goods train services) and road (railway operated services).
The book starts with a definition of terms. It goes on to provide general instructions and advice, with an overview of the documentation required. It deals with diseases of animals, such as foot and mouth disease and swine fever. As well as cattle, horses, sheep and pigs it includes regulations relating to live poultry - chickens, turkeys, geese, pheasants, pigeons, etc. There is even a paragraph mentioning wild beasts and exceptionally large animals (e.g. elephants)!
An Appendix gives details of extra charges like the feeding and watering of animals in transit, or for dealing with a cow which gives birth on the way. It has a list of relevant telegraph code words, plus the correct procedures to be followed if animals in transit become injured or die.
