RH038 The Continent via Harwich 1927
NEW FEBRUARY 2016. This account of the LNER ferry services from Harwich was a paper given before the graduates and students of the Institute of Transport in January 1927. It was presented by A. L. Gibson who was the Continental Traffic Manager (South) of the LNER. The origin of this file is a card-covered booklet which contained a reprint of the paper, dated 1928 and extracted from the Journal of the Institute of Transport.
It covers the Hook of Holland and the Antwerp passenger services, the Zeebrugge summer service and the Harwich to Zeebrugge train ferry. Topics include the International Timetable Conference, the Continental timebook, registration of baggage, forwarding agents, the handling of cargoes and international tariffs for both passengers and goods. The goings-on at Parkeston Quay are described, and so too are the Harwich fleet and its repairs and maintenance.
The word-searchable text is accompanied by two black and white reproductions of travel posters and fifteen photographs, some of them possibly unique to this booklet (such as one entitled 'Christmas Eve on board: a corner of a dining saloon').
The file will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
