On Tuesday 17 October 1961 a count was made of all passengers arriving at or departing from Liverpool Street, Bethnal Green, Fenchurch Street, Stepney and Stratford (Main). Every train was recorded, both suburban and long-distance. Brief comparative totals were given for past years back to 1952.
