RC066: Cartage Handbook, British Railways 1960.
NEW JANUARY 2025. This is a 70-page book published by British Railways in January 1960. It bore their reference BR20107.
By that date cartage was done solely by motor vehicles - diesel powered and battery-electric ones, both with a rigid wheelbase and articulated.
The book begins with legal requirements relating to road transport, then lays down instructions and guidance for operating and maintaining the vehicles. Aids to better driving and tips to avoid accidents follow. The book concludes with a section on the collection and delivery of merchandise - on consignment notes, correct labelling of parcels and such like. There are no illustrations apart from three drawings giving advice on how to manoeuvre a lorry.
