RC056: BR Collico Container Services, 1950's and 1960's.
NEW MARCH 2021. In conjunction with Messrs. Collico Ltd of Barking, in the late 1950's BR introduced a new service for customers. A manufacturer could hire packing cases, picking from a range of different sizes. When using them to send goods by rail, they would be charged just for the weight of the contents. On arrival, once the goods had been unpacked, the cases folded flat and BR then returned them free of charge for further use.
This file contains two short news items from the BR Magazine reporting this initiative. A 3-page illustrated article from the Transport Age magazine follows, designed to inform prospective users of the advantges of this system. Then comes British Railways' 24-page booklet BR18786/3, dated 1 January 1963, providing staff instructions relating to the hire, movement, documentation, charging and accountancy of these Collico collapsible cases. Next is Amendment Leaflet No. 1, a further five pages which cleared the way for them to be used for international traffic. Finally there are two pages taken from a 1967 BR Freight Handbook informing customers of the services offered (that complete Freight Handbook is available as File RC050).
The file is word-searchable and is provided with bookmarks. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
