RH098: The Early History of the Eastern Counties Railway.
NEW JANUARY 2023. The main part of the file consists of a two-part illustrated 13-page article from the Railway Magazine of May and June 1902. It is called 'The Genesis of the Great Eastern Railway', with the subtitle 'The Early History of the Eastern Counties Railway'.
It seems to be generally a decent account. Drawings and a description of Hall's panel signals, as used by the ECR, are included. So too is a sketch of their safety carriage coupling, some illustrations of carriage interiors plus a drawing of the early Norwich terminus. Photographs depict a few locomotives, the Romford Works and several viaducts and bridges.
The final page in the file is a related item from 'Pertinent Paragraphs' in the Railway Magazine for February 1902. It is a brief entry headed 'Railway relics and vandalism'. It deals with an old ECR locomotive which Sinclair arranged to have preserved, only for his successor S W Johnson to scrap it.
