For enthusiasts, researchers and modellers of the Great Eastern Railway

RC062: Through Passenger Bookings via London, BR 1967.

NEW JULY 2022.  The purpose of this book, issued by British Railways in 1967, was to enable a station to work out the cost of passenger tickets to cross-London destinations, eg Norwich Thorpe to Teignmouth via Exeter. The London terminal or terminals available for each destination are listed, and so too is the official distance in miles and chains. Apparently the issuing station would then convert the total distance for the journey into a price according to rates current at the time.

The book consists of about 120 foolscap pages. It begins with an introduction explaining how to use the information, with a worked example for the trip between Doncaster and Torquay. It goes on to explain how to cope with a first class passenger for whom part of the journey was operated by trains which were second class only.

Eight pages follow listing stations which do not appear in the main table. A lot of these are in East Anglia, and presumably are all on paytrain lines. Thus someone making for Wolferton for instance was to be given a ticket for King's Lynn and instructed to pay the extra locally.

Then comes the main table, its 108 pages containing the destination stations given alphabetically. To help you to find places quickly, we have provided bookmarks to the start of each letter in the alphabet. The file is also word-searchable.

Each entry give abbreviations for the London terminals, notification if at least part of the route is second class only and the distance. A few of these entries have subsequently been amended by hand.

The scans have been provided by our member John Palombi, and thanks are due to him and to Bill King who arranged for them to be made available here.

The file will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.?
