RG040: Rambles in Cambridgeshire, LNER 1930's.
NEW APRIL 2021. 'Rambles in Cambridgeshire' was published by the LNER. It is undated, but appears to be from the 1930's. Some authorities think it is as late as 1940, however.
Its purpose was to suggest walks from country stations. Cheap day ticket prices from Cambridge are quoted. The 99 pages contain fourteen of them, which you can see listed HERE. You will see that, despite the book's title, not all the walking is in Cambridgeshire - notably the ramble around Bury St Edmunds and Ickworth Park! Bernard Reeves, the author, seems to have taken his brief to be walks accessible by train from Cambridge as a base.
For each walk you get a description of the area, a map of the walk and instructions for the route. Footpaths are often used, but some of the time you are taken along what were then quiet country lanes but which may not be so ideal for a stroll nowadays! The text is illustrated with black-and-white line drawings.
Folded in at the back is a map which depicts Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. This shows the railway lines prominently in red, each with its LNER timetable number. They are superimposed on thinner black lines which are the bus routes marked with their service numbers.
