NEW JUNE 2020. This file contains descriptions of the permanent way used on early railways in the 1840s. The extracts are taken from issues of the monthly 'Civil Engineer and Architect's Journal, Scientific and Railway Gazette' between 1842 and 1850.

They are concerned mainly with rails, sleepers and fastenings. The nineteen pages of extracts consist of papers, discussions and reports of the ways different railways were tackling the problems involved.

The companies mentioned include the South Eastern Railway, the Hull and Selby, the Lancashire and Yorkshire, the London and North Western, the North Midland, and the Great Southern and Western of Ireland among others. William Baines read a paper at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers describing his patented chairs which were being trialled just outside Norwich Thorpe station.
