RH061 'They Carry the Goods', 1940s
NEW JULY 2018. At some date apparently in the mid-1940s, Longmans Green produced a series of booklets for the British Council under the title 'The British People: how they live and work' - presumably for the benefit of people overseas. Each one contained over thirty photographs with a brief descriptive commentary.
This one was called 'They Carry the Goods' (others in the series treated subjects such as English Villagers, Behind the Shop Counter, University Students, In the Streets and Ordinary People). It covers the transport of goods by rail, by road and by canal. Its 35 black-and-white photographs include one or two that are familiar from other publications of the time (such as a shot of a signalman with a LNER passenger train approaching outside the box), but most of them are fresh and new.
