MQ2.DL: The Management Quarterly, BR 1964-1970, as a Download.
NEW ENLARGED COMPLETE EDITION MARCH 2025. The original version of MQ.DL provided scans of a limited number of Management Quarterlies. If you have previously purchased that, you may deduct what you paid before from the price of this new edition.
The Management Quarterly was an internal BR document, whose circulation was restricted to their management. Its cover was marked ‘not for publication’, and its readers were exhorted to keep its contents “within the family”.
The first issue came out in May 1964 following a Management Conference held at York, and its introduction was penned by the then-Chairman Dr Beeching. Presumably the aim was to keep all the different branches of management in such a diverse organisation abreast of plans and developments, and aware of what other departments were doing.
We have here what we believe to be all twenty-one numbered editions, issued from 1964 to 1970, plus four supplements which came out during that period.
They certainly give an excellent insight into the behind-the-scenes thinking in the immediate post-Beeching era. The corporate image progressed: BR changed from British Railways to British Rail, and the familiar double-arrow logo first appeared. The topics discussed varied widely – from BR’s advertising policy to the introduction of Freightliners, and from computers in offices to BR’s pest control services!
As a bonus, the collection we provide here includes some other related items. The main ones are issues 1 to 10 of a similar publication from a decade later, all dated between 1979 and 1982. It was called Rail Manager.
You also receive a booklet which was produced in 1976,.whose format resembles the Management Quarterlies Its title is ‘Transport Policy: An Opportunity for Change’, and was described as comments from the British Railways Board on a Government consultative document of the time.
You can see a list of the contents of them all HERE.
