NEW JANUARY 2025.  This must surely be the wackiest item in the Files Emporium.  'G.E. Joys for Girls and Boys' was published by the Great Eastern Railway in 1922 and printed at their Stratford Works.  It appears to be almost unknown, and nobody has one for sale on the internet - this rare copy surfaced recently in the Netherlands. I know of no other.

It is a 48-page soft-cover booklet, clearly intended for children.  The front cover carries a drawing of one of their latest 4-6-0 express locomotives, No. 1546, with red imps clambering over it. Within the book the left page works through the alphabet, listing places served by the GER both in England and on the Continent via Harwich, accompanied by a silly rhyme or two. The opposite page has childish drawings relating to them.  The back cover shows a GER turbine steamer.

Probably wisely, their author is given only by his initials - A.L.G.  The drawings are credited to L.J.K., T.P. and C.J.A. (C J Allen??).

The book concludes with a map of the GE system and its connections.  The reader is told that, for particulars of how to get to the various places mentioned in this book and fares etc, Papa or Mamma should write to the GER Publicity Office, whose address is given.
