TO068: London railways worked solely by tank engines, 1902.
NEW JANUARY 2023. In the Railway Magazine for May 1902, J F Gairns wrote a six-page illustrated article which he called 'London Railways Worked by Tank Engines'. By that he meant ones which only used tank engines, so for that reason the GER was excluded.
The four he considered were the Metropolitan Railway, the Metropolitan District Railway, the North London Railway and the London Tilbury and Southend Railway (though for the last named he did concede that as well as their sixty tank engines there were two 0-6-0 tender engines for goods).
The March 1902 issue had a full-page colour plate of LT&SR 4-4-2T No. 51 'Tilbury Docks', and that has also been included here.
