RC060: Instructions for the Examining and Collection of Tickets, LNER 1927.
NEW APRIL 2022. This is a 61-page cloth-covered book entitled 'Instructions to Station Masters and other Staff engaged in the Examination and Collection of Tickets'. It was issued by the LNER in February 1927 and was printed at the Stratford Works.
It provides instuctions to stationmasters and ticket collectors on how they should handle various situations, and explains the current regulations concerning matters such as excess fare charges, out-of-date tickets, allowable breaks of journey and passengers travelling by a non-permitted route or over-travelling beyond their destination.
The original owner of the book has endorsed several of the entries with 'amended' or 'cancelled'. This has been done in a faded red pencil which in no way prevents you from seeing how the regulations stood in 1927. Only in two cases have those printed amendments been added, one of which is dated May 1930: these have both been included.
The final 22 pages of the book give a list of all the special ticket nippers in use on the LNER. Every one is identified by the cut-out shape it made and/or by the number or design it embossed on the ticket. The list starts with the Southern Area, alphabetically from Aldeburgh to Yarmouth Vauxhall, plus the travelling ticket inspectors and conductor guards. This is followed by all those from the North Eastern Area, the Southern Scottish Area and finally the Northern Scottish Area.
