RC042 Proposed Closure of the Mildenhall Branch, BR 1961
NEW MARCH 2017. This document was issued by British Railways in October 1961. Its full title is 'Proposed withdrawal of passenger train services from Mildenhall branch and certain passenger train services between Cambridge and Ely via Newmarket'.
At the back is a map of the whole line at a scale of about one inch to a mile. It also shows all the roads in the neighbourhood and indicates the buses which currently ran along them. The bus companies concerned were Eastern Counties, Burwell and District, Fordham and District Coaches, Morley's Grey Coaches of West Row and F & D Murfet of Soham.
The rest of the document is in typescript. There is an introductory memorandum which describes the line, and outlines the plans and their financial savings to the railway. It gives the timetables of proposed new bus services between Mildenhall and Newmarket and between Isleham and Cambridge.
Appendix A then shows the full timetable of the train services to be completely withdrawn. Appendix B gives the average total numbers of passengers joining and leaving those trains at each station on a weekday and the numbers who did so on a Saturday; these figures are based on two censuses, one taken in February 1961 and the other in July 1961, the two sets of figures being given separately.
Appendix C lists all the villages currently served by the line, with their population and their distance from the nearest station.
Appendix D is a set of large tmetables showing the bus services in the area as they were at the time. They are split into ones covering Cambridge-Ely via Fordham and Mildenhall, Newmarket-Burwell-Ely; Lakenheath-Newmarket via Mildenhall, Isleham and Fordham; and Lakenheath-Mildenhall-Bury St Edmunds. Local services provided by Fordham & District and Morley's are summarised, as well as the latter's express service to London. The appendix concludes with Morley's daily services for the armed forces from RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath.
