For enthusiasts, researchers and modellers of the Great Eastern Railway

A complete list of Stratford Works drawings at the National Railway Museum

All known surviving drawings and diagrams produced in the Locomotive, Carriage & Wagon Department of Stratford Works between the mid 1850s and its closure in 1963 have over the last 20 years been identified, sorted and listed by members of the Great Eastern Railway Society.

Their ownership is split between the National Railway Museum and the Great Eastern Railway Society and are listed here in three groups:

  • Drawings owned by the NRM
  • Drawings owned by the GERS Dupen Collection
  • Scanned drawings selected from the NRM and GERS Collections

Drawings owned by the NRM

This section lists all the drawings in the National Collection held at the National Railway Museum, York.  All inquiries regarding access must be made to the NRM, the GERS is unable to supply scans or copies.

Drawings owned by the GERS, the Dupen Collection

This collection is owned by the GERS and is deposited on loan to the Essex Record Office.

Thanks to the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society many of the locomotive-related drawings have been scanned. Those not scanned are marked with an asterisk in the first column of the locomotive drawings index. Copies may be requested from the Webmaster for a fee of £5 per drawing or 50p for a thumbnail so you can check the drawing will be of use to you.

For information about copies for the remaining drawings please contact our Archivist, Lyn Brooks.

Scanned drawings selected from the NRM and GERS Collections

Drawings originally microfilmed by the BR/OPC Joint Venture have been scanned and supplemented by further drawings from the NRM, GERS and John Watling Collections, totalling 1330.

The suffix to the reference number in the right hand column of the list shows the source of the original drawing.  Copies can be supplied by the GERS for those marked GERS and JW for £5 per drawing or 50p for a thumbnail. For the remainder application must be made to the NRM.
