7045 Geoff Pember Wagons
Location: Temple Mills Works, Date: May 1890. ECR/GER 4-plank Round-ended Open wagon : 9419
A four-plank wagon of a style introduced by the ECR in the 1850s (with variations that included three planks and flat ends) which continued to be built by a number of contractors until superseded by Adams' designs in the 1870s. Worsdell's 4-plank and Holden's 5-plank designs built in large numbers in the 1880s and 1890s hastened their withdrawal, but not before many, such as this example, received new springs, axle boxes, and - for the first time - brakes. Following an exam in May 1890, the wagon is seen in the last period of its revenue-earning life. Although many were scrapped, a large number had their working lives extended by being sold on, while others were appropriated as Service Stock around Stratford, or used in permanent way trains.
