Guest Layout - East End Grime was created by Paul Godwin (Godders53)
On behalf of Member, Jim Connor, I have uploaded his layout Harford Street layout which depicts London's East End in some of its grimiest days. Subscribers to the London Railway Record will know Jim's excellent work on recording London's changing railways. His interest in the architectural side of both the Cityscape and Railway Architecture shows through. Jim covers both the GE and NLR systems. I have selected the GE aspects for our Showcase.
Jim wrote the captions seen here.
White Horse Rd Bridge
J15 0-6-0 65476 crosses the bridge over White Horse Road with a down goods train.
Trafalgar Bridge
L1 2-6-4T 67726 crosses Trafalgar Bridge above White Horse Lane, with part of the war-damaged Trafalgar School on the left and the St Dunstan's rectory to the right.
Mile End Gate
L1 2-6-4T No 67727 leaving Mile End Gate.
Derelict Site between Ben Jonson Road and Duckett Street
Bombsite between Ben Jonson Road and Duckett Street. I made the rosebay willowherb by hand, only to find a packet of the stuff on sale at the Sudbury Show a few days later!
Limehouse Fields Down Platform
The down platform at Limehouse Fields, with buildings and lampposts based on those at Bow Road.
Limehouse Fields SLB and Solent House from a passing train
"View from a train" approaching the disused station at Limehouse Fields. I dedicate this view to that tiny group of enthusiasts who enterprisingly poked their cameras out of carriage windows to capture views of Leman Street and Shadwell & St Georges East et al!
Limehouse Fields with lino seller
The exterior of Limehouse Fields station. Funny, I think a virtually identical building on the north side of Bow Road was leased to the same electrical company!
High level view of Limehouse Fields Station
A general view of one end of the layout with Limehouse Fields station to the right, backed by one of the blocks of Carr Street Buildings. On the left stands Solent House with the disused St Dunstan's Underground station and the wartime ruin of St John's, Halley Street beyond.
The Mainline Public House
The Main Line public house. Main Line was a strong dark ale, which was once brewed at the Barleymow Brewery, Limehouse, and is still fondly remembered by many older East Enders.
Market Stalls by Limehouse Fields
The down side staircase building at the original Limehouse Fields station, with 3D printed market stalls by Charlie. It would be nice to think that those crates of 78rpm records were full of early 1920s hot dance and jazz bands, but they were probably all 1940s crooners!
Trafalgar Bridge with St Dunstans Rectory
Trafalgar Bridge over White Horse Lane again, but this time with a tram approaching. Yes, I know that trams had gone from the area by then, but how can a huge fan of 'The Elephant Will Never Forget' resist including them!
White Horse Road with J69
A J69 with one of my son, Charlie's 3D printed bodies passes the site of the first Limehouse Fields station. The trees on the backscene were photographed in the St Dunstan's Churchyard and enlarged to suit.
