MG011: 'The 'Locomotive Express' Volume 2, 1947.
NEW JULY 2020. The Locomotive Express was an unpretentious monthly magazine, produced by railwaymen for railwaymen - in particular for workers on the footplate and at the sheds ("practical articles by practical men"). What you are purchasing is a 240-page file of volume 2 which contains all twelve issues for 1947.
Every issue consisted of twenty pages, sixteen numbered ones plus four which made up the cover sheet. Each page was about the same size as the ones in the Railway Magazine of that period. A few photographs were included, though these may best be described as of newspaper quality.
It was edited in Edinburgh by Norman McKillop. A contributor to every issue was 'Toram Beg' (who also wrote in Trains Illustrated), whose regular engine was the A3 'Spearmint'. Firemen were provided with training for their exam to become passed drivers, and other articles were aimed at mechanics and even cleaners. There was a lively section of readers' letters. Pay did not feature in the magazine, but there was plenty on how to perform your job to a better standard.
The file is word-searchable and has bookmarks to the separate months. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
