RR060 Supplement to the General and Sectional Appendices, BR 1956
NEW APRIL 2016. This was produced by the Eastern Operating Area of British Railways in June 1956. The full title is 'No. 1 Supplement to the General and Sectional Appendices dated 1 November 1947'. It is a substantial publication comprising about 200 pages, shown here as a two-page word-searchable spread to a view.
The General Appendix itself amplifies the Railway's Rule Book - it applies it to specific routines, and also describes the correct way to use new equipment. The first 26 pages deal with changes to that. Some items were to be deleted and some amended, while many items were new. The thumbnail picture above illustrates a typical spread from this part.
The Sectional Appendix (the following 274 pages) covers the application of the rules to specific locations on the system, and appears to be what on other occasions was described as the Appendix to the Working Timetables but here it relates to the whole of the Eastern Area - the GCR and GNR sections as well as the GER one. This appears to be the first complete update since the original one was issued by BR in 1947. Thus as an example there is a list of all the public level crossings on the Waveney Valley line between Tivetshall and Beccles with an indication of who was now responsible for each of the gated ones, station staff or the trainmen. It adds that "A passenger train must not be run over this Branch line without the permission of the Operating Superintendent".
