MP050: Philips' ABC Pocket Atlas Guide to London c.1924.
NEW JULY 2024. This is a 152-page soft-coverred book intended to be carried around by a visitor to London. It describes itself as the fourteenth revised edition of the publication. There is no date visible, but it clearly came out in the early years of the 'big four' railway grouping which happened in 1923. The line out from Liverpool Street is marked as GER, for example, but at Stratford there is a label 'L.N.E. Works'.
The Atlas section of the book consists of a series of coloured maps, displayed as two-page spreads. They are mostly at a scale of two inches to the mile, with a grid of half-mile squares superimposed. London postal areas are indicated, with each of the sorting offices marked.
As its name implies, the book also served as a guide. There are a series of pages each containing a photograph of a London landmark with a description of it. There is a list of all the underground railways. An ABC gazetteer of London starts with entries for Academy, Royal, Adelphi Theatre and Admiralty, Whitehall before it gets to the Zoo eighteen pages later! There is a section which suggests places around London to visit, such as Cheshunt and Rye House.
