For enthusiasts, researchers and modellers of the Great Eastern Railway

RH095: The First Railway between Manchester and Sheffield, LNER 1945.

NEW APRIL 2022.  In the 1940s the LNER published a series of booklets describing the origins and history of some of their lines. Two of them relate to our area - 'The First Railway in Norfolk' (Yarmouth to Norwich, and later on to Brandon and Fakenham), and 'The Eastern Union Railway'. Both of those are available from us, and so too for completeness is a companion booklet in the series, on 'The Story of the West Highland'. The quickest way for you to find them is to scroll down to the Related Products list below this description, then click on the one you are after.

This 48-page booklet written by George Dow is entitled 'The First Railway between Manchster and Sheffield'. Published in 1945 it marked the centenary of the opening of the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway which was later to form part of the Great Central Railway. There is a table giving details of its locomotives. With the help of photographs, drawings, a map and a gradient profile it describes the subsequent story of the line, right through to a picture of the new LNER electric locomotive No. 6701 intended for working the Woodhead Tunnel. The final page of the file shows the receipt for the purchase of this particular copy of the booklet, issued by the LNER Advertising Manager's office.

The file is word-searchable and is provided with bookmarks. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
