RG036: Sun Pictures of the Norfolk Broads, 1892.
NEW OCTOBER 2020. This is the book of evocative photographs by Payne Jennings with captions by Ernest R Suffling. It is the second edition - undated, but the GER advertisement in it reveals that it came out in 1892.
It is a hard-back book with 114 pages. The copy scanned was in good condition apart from a little foxing to some of the pages, but this in no way spoils the images.
The title page declares "one hundred photographs from nature of the rivers and broads of Norfolk and Suffolk". These photographs are displayed two to a page with their detailed captions opposite. They start with plates 3 and 4 on page 2. What has happened to plates 1 and 2? There is no sign of a missing page, and indeed the list of photographs contains only 98 entries covering plates 3 to 100.
The book has a full-page frontispiece, unnumbered but perhaps this is regarded as plate 2. What about plate 1 then? The only possibility seems to be that it was on a now-missing dust jacket. You will receive just 99 photographs, therefore.
The inside front cover has a pencilled inscription 'Chippenham Park, 1892' with the name P Tharp in a juvenile hand. This is the Chippenham near Newmarket. Captain Tharp and his estate appear in our summaries of the minutes of the GER Way and Works Committee for 1879. As a bonus this story is outlined, complete with two recent photographs, on the otherwise blank page facing the inscription.
