RG035: Pictorial Guide to the Eastern Counties, 1899.
NEW AUGUST 2020. This is a lovely book. It was published by Bright's Ltd. of Bournemouth, clearly with the encouragement of the GER. It is the first edition - undated, but the GER timetables in it reveal that it came out in 1899.
It is a heavy soft-covered book. Its 192 pages, landscape orientated and of glossy paper, are considerably larger than A4 in size (measuring a little over 30 cm by 24 cm). As well as descriptive text there are nearly 200 decent quality photographs, several of them displayed full-page. They were mostly taken by reputable local photographers, including Payne Jennings. Plenty of advertisements are included too. The only thing missing from the copy scanned was a map which is mentioned.
The book takes you on two journeys from Liverpool Street. The first is by the Colchester main line: it covers Essex, Suffolk and most of Norfolk right through to Cromer. The second trip is on the Cambridge main line. This one goes through Cambridge itself to Kings Lynn and Hunstanton, then diverts via Peterborough to reach Lincoln and York.
To learn more of what is included, you can access a sequence of its pages HERE - you get the Contents List and an index of photographs, plus a few advertisements to tantalise you!
The file is word-searchable and has bookmarks. It will be available to download as soon as payment has been made. You go to your account and click on ‘Downloads’. New customers create an account as they place their order.
