LM044 Locomotives of the LNER 1947
NEW MARCH 2018. The LNER issued this 68-page booklet in 1947. It describes their engine policies at the time - a set of standard classes which they would develop, and a list of those non-standard classes which they deemed worth maintaining. This file displays the book in two-page spreads.
The standard classes are each described. These would be for express work, mixed traffic, freight and shunting (though the company's standard light shunter was yet to be designed). Each of the standard classes is illustrated with a posed photograph plus a 'diagram' comprising a line drawing and its main dimensions. Several of the non-standard classes to be maintained (such as the A4, B2 and K5) also have photographs included.
There is a twenty-page appendix listing every current class in the LNER fleet, from A1 to Z5 (plus the electric, diesel and petrol locomotives), giving details such as who built them, their driving wheel diameter, number of cylinders, boiler pressure and tractive effort; one column lists the number in the class as at 31.10.1946. Appendix 2 summarises the 1946 renumbering scheme, and Appendix 3 gives all the LNER's named engines.
