RH081: Railways in East Anglia - contemporary news reports 1839-1850.
NEW JUNE 2020. The monthly Civil Engineer and Architect's Journal, Scientific and Railway Gazette appeared from 1839 to 1850. In addition to major articles it provided a round-up of the news of the current month, presented in a brief matter-of-fact way.
It is those news items that are provided here as a 30-page file, arranged in chronological order. Most of them relate to new or proposed railways in what eventually was to become GER territory. Railways mentioned include among others the Eastern Counties, the Yamouth & Norwich, the Norfolk, the Eastern Union, the Northern & Eastern and the Lynn & Ely. The 'modern' trend for heavier and heavier locomotives is criticised, and the ECR is praised for its light-weight railcar 'Enfield' which is described in detail.
One line not featured here is the London & Blackwall Railway. This is because some in-depth articles about it appeared in the magazine, and therefore that line has been accorded its own file in the Emporium – RH079.
A few snippets are on East Anglian topics but not railways (such as Southwold harbour); a few others are on railways which are not in East Anglia, but are judged to be of general interest.
