RE059: Contract for new sub-station equipment for the Shenfield electrification, LNER 1941.
NEW APRIL 2024. In 1939 the LNER was planning to electrify the route from Liverpool Street to Shenfield plus Fenchurch Street to Bow Junction. Tenders had been invited, and the one for providing suib-station equipments had been awarded to the General Electric Company Limited. A formal contract was drawn up between the two parties, and that is what we have here. It is dated 1941. At the outbreak of War the project was put on hold, so that is puzzling - the more so because the completion dates it contains are for 1940!
The contract comes in the form of a 157-page printed foolscap book. This one has wriiten on the back cover 'Copy No. 89'. The contents list can be seen HERE. There are no illustrations. Schedule C lists some accompanying drawings that were to be supplied, but they are not present here. In general individuial prices are not quoted, but the agreement does state the total cost of this contract - £184.005 0s 0d.
The book has generously been donated by a member, and it is hoped it will eventually appear in the Society Collection at the Essex Record Office.
